Specialist Schools

Don Valley Academy became a Performing Arts College in 2005. We have used this status to drive forward improvements in school using the Performing Arts as a tool to develop the confidence, motivation and aspirations of our young people.

Our specialism main subjects are Drama, Dance and Music. We believe firmly in finding creative ways to challenge and develop our students as young people both in and out of these lessons. As a result, many of our young people are given fantastic extra-curricular opportunities, led by staff willing to go the extra mile for our students at lunchtime, after school, in the evenings and at weekends. This leads many of our students to excel with their talents, in local, regional and national fields in the Performing Arts.

To accompany our many productions and showcases in the Performing Arts, we take many evening educational visits each year, for all year groups, visiting the most renowned, enjoyable and thought-provoking theatrical productions at Yorkshire’s most established theatres, such as the Sheffield Crucible, West Yorkshire Playhouse and the York Theatre Royal. Students pay a minimal fee and much of the cost of the trip is subsidised by the Performing Arts College.

The Performing Arts are proud to work closely with our Primary Partner Schools and also within our community, offering classes on a Saturday morning for younger children.
