Tutor Time

Tutor time occurs each day at DVA with vital messages and sessions being shared with students.

Within Tutor Time you have a well-designed curriculum which is implemented to support students in all subject areas. They will cover the following areas:

Events and Culture- Each week students will look at facts and information outside of the curriculum linked to different themes or events taking place that week. This may include This is Culture (TIC) or it may be linked to celebrating key events in the calendar.

Form time Admin- This provides an opportunity for form tutors to collate and record any pledges. They will give out attendance data – This MUST be put into the students planner. Please also use this time to go through any year group events for that week.

WOTW – WOTW (word of the week) will be provided. This MUST be written into the students planners as this will form part of the ‘quizzing’ that happens on the morning Gatecrasher. This is also tested by the English team.

DEAR – DEAR (Drop Everything and Read – this can be read aloud by the teacher or by using other methods to encourage collaborative reading. This will in most cases be linked to wider cultural events that are taking place.

Votes for Schools – This provides an opportunity for our students to get involved an official democratic process. Each week, a topic will be provided for forms to discuss. This is provided via an external company therefore all resources will be provided. Students will need to vote at the end of each session – Form tutors must input their votes. This will then be calculated. At the start of the next session, we will be able to see our schools results as-well as how that compares with other school nationally.

Assemblies

At DVA you are fortunate to experience assemblies each week which cover t important themes and deals. These regular assemblies keep you updated with current issues which would affect you locally and others around the world, while addressing BritishValues and Protected Characteristics. You have covered issues such as:

  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • LGBTQIA+
  • Remembrance
  • Black History
  • Religious Observances

As an additional layer to this you also have the privilege of external speakers to reinforce messages which impact your lives. These include:

  • CEOP
  • Restart a Heart
  • Smashed Live! (Alcohol Education)
  • The Riot Act (Road Safety)
  • Anticipate (Antisocial Behaviour and Safety on Dark Nights)
  • College and Sixth Form Presentations promoting life beyond DVA.

Assemblies also provide us with the opportunities to be responsive to issues within our school and wider community. This comes from student voice, safeguarding concerns and other reports. We have covered things such as:

  • Racism
  • Harassment
  • Peer on Peer Abuse
  • Substance Abuse
